Artists Statement

Kyla Parkinson

An artist has been defined as a “philosopher/craftsman/scholar, who hands society the objective results of his labour (Benjamin Burloch)”. This multifaceted job description is the formula of success for me
As an artistic philosopher; I attempt to challenge the fast paced culture of our time by considering much slower, conscious suggestions of seeing and being in the world. In responding to life observations on perception, I form sensitive illustrations that signify an awareness of the present moment.
This position I carry through in my art practice with small paintings on found book pages or watercolour paper, created as gentle gestures of mindfulness. The utilising of a mixture of watercolour/ink/tree sap/natural beetroot juice and pencil allows the forms to carry  a quietude, necessary for allowing the viewer a space of contemplation.
The scholarly aspects of my life have provoked me; to turn these insights from thoughts to visual symbolism. Indulging in the theoretical histories on Transience and Wabi Sabi’s nature based presence, to develop a visual language. I work in a place that sits between figurative and abstraction in seeking out a place of conscious reflection.
In crafting these states of being; I seek to question the human experience and its likeness to the natural world’s transient existence.
